If there is a lesson to be in the recently held elections(March-APRIL 2015), it’s that the future of the Nigerian youth is bleak. I used to begrudge the older generation for not giving us a chance to represent ourselves during elections but with the experiences I had during the 1 month period which the elections lasted, I bear no animosity towards the older generation any longer, all I have is fear and pity for our generation. Our generation is mature enough to lead and direct affairs of our nation but it’s impossible because we have nothing to deliver. Majority of our youths are too busy being distracted by senseless, mundane and irrelevant affairs to step up to take the mantle of leadership, those who can deliver have either been intimidated or compromised. I can’t imagine why the youths will take to the streets to sell their future for a small envelope. An able-bodied youth will abandon his responsibilities and run around campaigning for a politician and get paid peanut, when that particular politician assumes office, do you think he’ll remember you or even call to thank you for the support. When such politician misbehaves in office, you can’t say jack because you’ve already eaten your cake. What most of these youths don’t know is every politician you campaign or vote for doesn’t give a shit about you, all they need is your vote, they have their agenda, their vendetta and in some cases their successor already planned way before election date. I remember the last before this recent election when the past president won by a major margin, no one knew his plans until he started and look where everybody is, running back to someone they had total disregard for The common trend among our youth now is the internet scam (Yahoo plus), prostitution, armed robbery and cultism. It’s understandable the situation of the country is not encouraging to honest earners but this doesn’t mean they should abandon the affairs of the country and leave us at the mercy of the corrupt older generation. Our first class graduates are jobless while someone with forged certificates gets a political appointment with juicy benefits. If we don’t fight this rot, this country will never develop. Now we have a new head of state and we expect him to fix this rot as if he’s a magician, a rot that’s been feeding deep into our system for a long time, fixing this country is not a one-man job, it’s a collective responsibility but the older generation isn’t ready to involve us, so it’s up to us to infuse ourselves into this government and make ourselves indispensable to them. I also strongly disagree with the trend of voting for someone just because your role-model or icon endorses the candidate. In case you didn’t know, before your so-called icon endorses someone, there’s already a play in progress, a deal has been struck but you gullibly follow like a strung puppet. While you bear the brunt of the leadership, your role-model is out there living large. I believe the idea of celebrities endorsing politicians is by far the most unethical thing to do. Dear Celebs reading this, we look up to you, we idolize you but when you decide to start influencing us to do something just because of your selfish and senseless reasons, we begin to lose respect for you. An incident during the presidential campaign involving an actor who tried to blackmail a candidate, citing why he would advise voters against voting that candidate was personal and he wasn’t willing to shed more light on the issue but still he was expecting to sway his fans, that’s overstretching goodwill, they (government) donate millions every time to the entertainment industry so the actors and singers can brainwash us with their nonsense and live in affluence, they show off and we applaud them while we the masses live on a dollar a day, we better get up and start a revolution and let our demands known. If the average youth is complaining about how tough times are, you can only imagine what the complaints of an unemployed family man would entail. Rent, children school fees, family welfare etc. I am very sure when we decide to wake up and see how bad things really are, a backlash will most definitely ensue and it might possibly lead to another civil war but by then I’m sure the main culprits, the initiators of this terrible situation will all be dead and rotten in their graves. Every Nigerian youth needs to get up and be a part of the system. The Kogi election is just 16 days away, it is important we understand that even though the kind of leaders we crave for are never party candidates for the major political parties in the country, but i believe we as a people can do more with the emergence of #YSIPD we can send a warning to those leaders on selfish mission to desist, those that swore that the Youths will never have their place in decision making of our great country. if we don’t become an actor we will never be a factor. We shouldn’t allow ourselves be muffled by the party candidate, the government should be accountable to us. Our parents lived in this condition we were born in this condition, should our future also revel in this misery?... In the words of the legendary Bob Marley "Emancipate yourself from Mental slavery None, but ourselves can free our minds" The die is cast and the stage set. Kogi Youths should use the gubernatorial election to send a loud message to other youths in different parts of the country and the leaders at large.
GOD BLESS NIGERIAN YOUTHS
