POLITICAL MARGINALISATION OF THE SOUTH EAST..... THE BITTER TRUTH.
This topic is older than myself and so many other people who might be stumbling into it, yet I'm not seeing solutions to the questions raised by this topic. As a matter of fact, if the issue is not addressed, our generations unborn will be faced with the same issue and would probably be more confused about it than we are.
*THE QUESTIONS....
1. WHY ARE THE PEOPLE OF SOUTH EAST DOWN THE POLITICAL PECKING ORDER IN NIGERIA .
2. CAN WE EVER PRODUCE A PRESIDENT IN A 'ONE NIGERIA' SITUATION, WHY ARE WE INSTANTANEOUSLY DIVIDED WHEN CRITICAL ISSUES IN NIGERIA IS BROUGHT Up AND CAN WE UPHOLD AND LIVE PEACEFULLY EVEN IF BIAFRA IS THROWN TO US ON A PLATTER OF GOLD.
3. AN AVERAGE SOUTH EASTERNER WORKS HARD TO MAKE ENDS MEET, RARELY BEG ON THE STREETS, YET WE CANNOT PRODUCE A COLLECTIVE VOICE POLITICALLY.
There are many more questions, but I will continue in subsequent articles.
ANSWERS!!
The answers to the questions above for me are short, bitter and almost unresolvable, Except with a consensus agreement to fight (NOT WAR) for a common cause, giving what we can give and making sacrifices where necessary . This is because all the efforts of our heroes past have been washed away by 'we' their successors, who saw their ideas as a waste of time, ethnic and acts of tribalism, yet providing no solution or new ways to go about it, thereby leaving the puzzle unsolved

.
Question 1.....
WE are down the pecking order because we have lost the political value and standard with which our heroes operated. No matter who was in power or where they were, things were never done behind them, the likes of Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe, Alvan Ikoku, M I Okpara, etc had a standard they operated, hence they were never underrated. Moreover, our northern brothers are good 'political dynasty' builders. At any point in time, there is always a chain of connection that will link you to their fore fathers. Where ever one finds himself, he brings in 2 or 3 people as evident in their population in important federal government ministries and agencies. This is the primary problem of the south East. The people who were opportune to occupy certain offices were thinking about themselves and their families, never their region. So that once he leaves the office or position, it is gone. That is why at between 25-30 Northerners are brought on board to important federal ministries... When will he or she leave, how will he not be loyal to the person that brought him in even after so many years, how will he forget the person's family and how won't he do same while in office and build his own chain of connections. We keep hearing new names springing up in the northern political circle, but down here, it is same name same people, same family year in, year out. They (Northerners) recircle political appointments and positions among themselves and even compensate one another with same. It's no news that former Pres. Umaru was picked as compensation for the hardwork of his elder brother Shehu.
Question 2 and 3...
With the way things are currently, we can never produce a president in a one Nigeria situation. Don't ask me why because it's crystal clear, we are not ready, as we are too divided to give a united push for it to happen. Who gets the nod and who will
get a general blessing, because everybody would like to be the candidate. Who will step down for who?, we do not have a collective voice that can speak for the region and the decision stands. Of course I have not forgotten Ohaneze Ndi-Igbo who are no doubt great Igbo Leaders from different walks of life, but whatever they say will not be binding when the time comes not because it cannot but because we were all born into it "IGBO ENWE EZERISM"...... NO ONE FEEDS ANOTHER, WHO IS RICHER THAN WHO, WHY SHOULD IT BE HIM OR HER.... THESE QUESTIONS WILL RAISE THEIR UGLY HEADS. SOMEONE MIGHT EVEN BETRAY US. LITTLE WONDER THE IMPORTANT APPOINTMENTS MADE SO FAR, NON CAME TO US. WE HAVE NEVER BEEN THIS UNDERRATED, BECAUSE THEY SAID THE APPOINTMENTS WHERE BASED ON MERIT. SIMPLY MEANS IN THE ENTIRE SOUTH EAST, WE CAN'T PRODUCE TECHNOCRATS WHO CAN OCCUPY THE POSITIONS. -*IT'S A PITY OR RATHER, A THING OF WORRY* But then there are still no answers. I'm confused as much as many youths my age and even beyond are....?? Who has answers? Who will quench my thirst for answers to the IGBO MARGINALISATION QUESTIONS.
Until then, let me continue to pray for a sustainable Nigeria, where we are all important.
OFONEME CHUKWUMAELO DANIEL (B. SC,) POLITICAL SCIENCE)
